((Summary of Program))
Participants visited to Sendai City, Onagawa Town, and Minamisanriku Town, in MIYAGI Pref.
In March 2011, the Great East Japan Earthquake and subsequent tsunami caused massive damage mainly to the coastal areas.
In Arahama district in Wakabayashi Ward, Sendai City, which was one of the hardest hit areas, the tsunami reached as high as 10 meters (the world's highest wave on a plain), striking the communities after breaking over a concrete breakwater and trees designed to protect the coast from tsunamis.
In Onagawa Town, the 20-meter-high tsunami that struck after the Earthquake devastated the central part of the city, leaving 70 % of the houses swept away and about 10 % of the population dead.
In Minamisanriku Town was devastated by the massive tsunami that struck after the Earthquake. Houses, schools and the town office were swept away and certificates of residence and family registers were lost, which make it very difficult to identify bodies.
The delegation visited the areas affected by the tsunami while listening to the stories of the earthquake disaster, and learnt about the actual state of the disaster and current state of the disaster-affected areas by finding out what happened on the day of the disaster, and understand with what thoughts people are making efforts toward recovery.
